Cordless Saws Review

Cordless Circular Saw

Cordless Circular Saw

When it comes to essential tools for building and renovating, and even those smaller jobs around the home, a portable circular saw is a must for the toolbox.

Before you get around to which brand, the choices you have are between corded and cordless circular saws. Both have advantages and disadvantages, and it comes down to what you’re using one for and deciding what best fits your situation.

Corded and cordless circular saws are quite easy to maintain and both come with good warranties to protect your investment.

Don’t underestimate cordless saws when it comes to power. They can range in power from eighteen volts up to twenty four volts. So, they can handle even heavy duty jobs.

Cordless saws are usually less in weight than their corded cousin, weighing between three to ten pounds. Overall, they are lightweight and easy to handle.

A disadvantage for cordless saws is that they have a limited amount of power available at any one time. Once the battery pack has gone flat from usage, you need to recharge it to continue with the job. Obviously it’s best to purchase a second battery pack and have it charged and ready for action at all times

A corded circular saw only needs plugging into a standard power outlet and it’s ready for the task at hand. You don’t have to worry about running out of power – unless you unplug the lead!

There is, however, an obvious disadvantage with a tool being attached to a power cord. The dangling cord can be the cause of accidents – such as tripping over the cord, or cutting through the cord and being electrocuted.

Another disadvantage compared to a cordless saw is using the tool in tight places such as in the attic, under the house, or long distances from a power source. This is when cordless portable saws come into their own.

Overall, a cordless power saw is a fantastic tool to own and operate.

Highly Recommended
According to a recent US consumer survey, the best cordless circular saw is the Milwaukee 0730-22. This saw comes with a 5 year warranty and performs just as good as corded circular saws. It costs around $300 so it’s at the top of the price range.

Cheaper cordless saws include the Ryobi P500 at $120. It’s not as powerful as the Milwaukee cordless, but it still has a carbide-tipped blade, an ergonomic handle, plus a laser guide. However, the blade is a mite small at 5.5 inches and it has a bevel that adjusts to only 45 degrees, but this Ryobi circular saw will perform extremely well for the home handyman.

The Circular Saw This hand held rotary saw featuring a circular blade is one of the most common power tools in use today. Larger the diameter of the blade, deeper is the cut they offer. This tool can also be fitted with different blades for operation on different materials.

Circular Saw Advice Scott Cam, the builder from the Backyard Blitz team, has some valuable advice on buying the best circular saw for home use. He recommends lightweight machines with a small blade diameter – that is blade diameters of 162mm (6 1/2″) to 185mm (7 1/4″).
