Power Tool Maintenance
Taking proper care of portable power tools, or any tools for that matter, means you have to make sure you maintain them on a regular basis. Good maintenance is essential if you want to be certain that the power tool works when you want it to.
Dust
Be sure to keep power tools clean and free from dust. Give them a wipe over to remove any obvious dirt or dust after every use, with particular care being given to the housing intake. Some tools require complete disassembly at certain periods to check and clean all components. Refer to manufacturer instruction manual.
Cords
Power cords get worn and torn with use. Check for loose wires and for plugs coming away from the leads. Don’t allow oil and grease to build up on cords – give them a good wipe down with a cloth. Examine the prongs of cords as well. They should be strong and straight with intact casing.
Oil
Some tools require oiling occasionally to stop seizure of the engine or parts eg chainsaws. Also, lightly oil any tools with a cutting surface to help prevent rust.
Storing Tools
Don’t throw out the original packaging that your tools came in. Keep them stored in the cardboard box or container when not in use as this can help them remain free of dust and dirt.
If you make the effort to properly care for your tools, especially all portable power tools, then they should give you many years of valuable service.
Remember to purchase good quality power tools in the first place – then you know they will last. Look for brand names you trust. Do some research, including the online consumer reviews, to get a good indication of the best tool to suit your needs.
Tools should only be used for the particular job they were designed and manufactured for. For example, power tools with blades have to have sharp teeth so that they don’t need to work hard at cutting through material.
